Campus Safety - Grounds Monitor

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:30–9:30 P.M., excluding breaks and other days when the College is closed

Job Description:

The Campus Safety and Ground Monitor Work-Study (student monitor), operating under the supervision of the Coordinator of Campus Safety, aims to enhance safety on the NJC campus during evening hours. In collaboration with the NJC Physical Plant department, the student monitor will play an important role in identifying safety concerns and addressing basic grounds and maintenance issues in educational buildings and outdoor common areas.

Working in pairs, the student monitor's primary responsibility is to conduct comprehensive safety walks through key campus buildings, including ES French Hall, Whyman Hall, Hays Student Center, Knowles Hall, and other relevant structures. Student monitors will observe and promptly report safety, maintenance, and ground-related issues to the appropriate campus authorities. Student monitors will not directly intervene in any observed issue unless specified in this job description or at the expressed direction of a campus authority. Student monitors will immediately remove themselves from any situation with a potential danger of conflict and report the issue to the Coordinator of Campus Safety and the police as appropriate.

Job Duties:

  1. Conduct a thorough safety walkthrough of all hallways, corridors, and bathrooms of ES French Hall, Whyman Hall, Hays Student Center, Knowles Hall, and other buildings as needed.
  2. Report any safety concerns, including but not limited to fallen trees, unauthorized individuals, improperly parked vehicles, suspicious activity, unusual occurrences, smell or sight of smoke, blatant fire code violations, and other issues related to campus safety.
  3. Report any maintenance issues, including but not limited to building damage, water leaks, burst pipes, inoperable security lighting, graffiti, building damage, or other issues related to the NJC campus grounds and maintenance.
  4. Securely lock classroom and office doors.
  5. Turn off lights and sinks inside buildings as necessary to promote resource conservation.
  6. Complete a nightly shift report and note any unlocked doors or issues encountered.
  7. Report any knowledge of any crime or campus policy violation to the Coordinator of Campus Safety, pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act.
  8. Return keys, flashlight, ID cards, and other equipment at the end of the work shift.

To qualify for a work-study position, you must first have a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine your eligibility.  You may apply for multiple work-study positions.  Your submitted application will be sent to the position supervisor(s), and it is up to them to contact you for an interview or for hiring.  After being hired, you will be required to sign a financial aid work-study contract, and complete hire forms through our Human Resources office.
