Applying for Aid

IMPORTANT 2024-2025 FAFSA APPLICATION INFORMATION:
Northeastern is being impacted by the nation-wide delays in schools receiving FAFSA information. The Financial Aid Office is working diligently to serve our students! Students are encouraged to login to their FAFSA portal to take any actions, if needed, or view their FAFSA Submission Summary. How am I going to pay for school? To apply for federal and/or state financial aid you must complete the FAFSA or the CASFA.  The 2024-25 FAFSA & CASFA Applications for the Fall 2024 term will open December 31, 2023.

FAFSA

As part of the Application Process, you will fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your Financial Aid award is based on a standard Federal formula that calculates the cost of attendance minus your family contribution. Family contribution takes into account family/student income, assets, age, family size, etc. FAFSA is a free application; please be aware that fraudulent websites exist.

Apply for FASFA

Professional Judgement Form

If your family's financial situation is different than the income information reported on the FAFSA, you may be eligible to submit a Professional Judgement request: Professional Judgement Form

Since the FAFSA requires the tax and income data from 2-years prior, you may be able to use your most current or prior-year tax and income information if your financial circumstances have changed. You must first submit your FAFSA application to include the required 2022 tax information. Then you may submit a Professional Judgement review directly to the college, in which the financial aid advisors can update your FAFSA with the most current data that you provide. Circumstances that will be considered for review include the following:

  • Loss or change in employment
  • Other changes in income such as loss of child support, alimony, or one-time income
  • High medical or dental expenses in excess of 11% of the adjusted gross income

CASFA

The Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA) is now available for students who do not have lawful immigration status, but have resided in Colorado for at least three years before graduating from a Colorado high school.  For more information about CASFA, please visit their website.

FRESH START!  For loan borrowers with federal student loans in default

Wanting to return to college to complete your education, but stuck in federal loan default?  Now is the time to return to school!  The U.S. Department of Education announced the Fresh Start Initiative, determining that students cannot be denied federal student aid due to having student loans in default prior to March 13, 2020, when the covid pandemic began. Fresh Start students are able to return to school and receive federal aid to include grants, work-study, and student loans.  Students will need to make payment arrangements with their lender within one-year after the federal 'Payment Pause' period ends (Payment Pause expected to end after June 30, 2023). Click here to review the federal Fresh Start initiative completely.  To start this process, you must submit your current FAFSA to Northeastern, by logging into FAFSA.gov.
