Future Students-Honors

Admissions Process

The Honors Program accepts admission applications on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.  The Honors Program admission application can be found on the NJC website:  www.njc.edu/honors

If there is room in the program priority will be given to applications that are received by October 15 of each year for students to start in the program the following spring semester. 

 Applications for CTE students will only be accepted in the Fall semester for the following spring semester.  Priority will be given to the applications received by October 15.

Applications received by April 1, for the fall semester, will be given priority.

Additional Info

  • Students with more than 30 credit hours will not be accepted to the Honors Program.
  • First year nursing students will not be admitted to the program.  There simply will not be enough time for the necessary work for the nursing program and the honors program.
  • Concurrent enrollment students will not be accepted to the Honors Program.
  • Students who are not in good academic standing with NJC or with a violation in their student files will not be accepted to the Honors Program.
  • Students who do not meet the admission requirements can petition the Honors Program Director for admission.  They will then meet with the Director who may waive the requirements and allow a student admission.  They must then meet the requirements of all students to continue in the program.
  • For first semester freshmen, with less than 12 credit hours total.
    • High school GPA of 3.5 or higher.
      • Submit transcripts from your high school and any college classes.
    • Compose an essay about your passion(s).  This might be in an academic area or any other subject you are passionate about.
    • Please submit the name and email address of a person to fill out a reference form for you.
    • Academic standing and student files will be reviewed if you are taking any NJC courses.
    • An interview will be conducted.  This will be done in person, via telephone or via a Webex meeting.  This will be conducted within 2 weeks of the priority deadline for the submission of applications. If the application is received after the priority deadline, the interview will be conducted as soon as possible.
  • Second Semester Freshmen, students who have 12-30 total credit hours.
    • NJC cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
    • If the student is a transfer student, they will need to provide official transcripts from their other school.
      • The student will have to have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
    • Compose an essay about your passion(s).  This might be in an academic area or any other subject you are passionate about.
    • One reference
      • This can be a short email to the Honors Director from an NJC faculty member if the student is a current NJC student.
    • Academic standing and student files will be reviewed.
    • An interview will be conducted.  This will be done in person, via telephone or via a Webex meeting.  This will be conducted within 2 weeks of the priority deadline for the submission of applications.  If the application is received after the priority deadline, the interview will be conducted as soon as possible.
  • Students in a CTE field of study.
    • ALL students in a CTE field of study that wish to be admitted to the NJC Honors Program must have the recommendation from an NJC faculty member in their program or the recommendation from the Program Director.
      • The student will need to complete 1 semester in their program and then talk to an instructor or the director of the program about applying to the Honors Program.
    • NJC cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
    • Compose an essay about your passion(s).  This might be in an academic area or any other subject you are passionate about.
    • One reference
      • This MUST be from an NJC faculty member of the CTE field of study or from the Program Director of the field of study.
    • Academic standing and student files will be reviewed.
    • An interview will be conducted.  This will be done in person, via telephone or via a Webex meeting.  This will be conducted within 2 weeks of the priority deadline for the submission of applications.  If the application is received after the priority deadline, the interview will be conducted as soon as possible.
  • Successfully complete 20 credit-hours of honors coursework.
  • Successfully complete a capstone project in the Spring semester of sophomore year.
  • Maintain a 3.3 cumulative GPA for all NJC credits.
  • Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA for NJC honors-designated courses or honors contracts.
  • Must complete 60 hours of service learning/volunteer hours.
  • Must complete 200 Honors Activity points.
  • As a Freshman host the Honors banquet. 
  • As a Sophomore attend the Honors banquet.
  • Participate in the poster session held each semester.
