Residence Life - Housing

Residence Halls

Each residence hall is under the leadership of a professional Residence Hall Director or Resident Assistant staff. The staff is carefully selected and receives extensive training. Together they provide a living and learning community whereby each resident has the opportunity to make new friends, grow individually, and receive support for their academic endeavors.

Residence Life Policy

All first-year students with less than thirty (30) semester credit hours earned are required to live in the residence halls for two semesters and/or until thirty (30) semester credits are earned. Exemptions to this policy are first-year students who are:

  1. Over twenty-one years of age,
  2. Married,
  3. Have minor dependent children,
  4. Commuting to Northeastern from a parent/guardian’s residence within a 60-mile radius,
  5. Serving in the military.

Freshman students will be required to contract for two semesters. Students who do not meet the exemptions above and choose to live off campus will be charged one half of a semester standard room/board rate.

Contract

The Residence Hall Contract, from the beginning date of the contract period, binds the resident to the length of contract. All students residing in the residence halls are required to purchase a meal plan in conjunction with the Residence Hall Contract. Students may choose between the following meal plans:

  • 10 meals per week + 150 flex points
  • 14 meals per week + 100 flex points
  • 19 meals per week + 50 flex points
  • 75 meals per semester + 150 flex points
  • 100 meals per semester + 100 flex points

Off-campus students may purchase meals daily or purchase a prepaid meal plan through the Cashier's Office.

Room Assignment Policy

All residents must pay a $150.00 housing deposit and complete a Residence Hall Application to reserve accommodations. Colorado law requires college students born since January 1, 1957, to be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella. All students under the age of 19 must show proof of immunity if they attend a college or university with on-campus housing.

For all public and non-public post-secondary institutions in Colorado, state law requires that each incoming first-year student residing in student housing or any student who the institution requires to live on campus must submit to Northeastern proof (i.e., a standard certificate indicating immunizations were administered to the student) of immunization or the student must sign a waiver stating they have reviewed information on meningococcal disease and acknowledge the potential health risks associated with bacterial meningitis or meningococcal disease and have decided not to receive the vaccination. If the student is under the age of 18 years, the student's parent or guardian provides this information.

Contract Release

The Residence Hall Contract is a legal and binding document for services rendered or reserved. The Department of Residence Life realizes, however, that circumstances may change once students move into the residence halls, and for that reason, the following guidelines will govern a Contract Release request:

  1. Medical: The resident has developed a specific medical situation which prevents him/her from fulfilling the terms of the contract. A medical verification which specifically states the nature of the medical situation and why it contributes to the resident’s contract. A release request must be supplied by a health care professional (on the physician’s letterhead with signature) and must accompany all requests for a release based on medical reasons.
  2. Financial: The resident’s financial situation has undergone an involuntary change, which was beyond his/her control when the Residence Hall Contract was first signed. A Student Financial Profile must be supplied by the Financial Aid Office for all financially related requests for a release or documented financial records indicating an involuntary change.
  3. Extenuating Circumstances: The resident has undergone situations, other than financial or medical, which the resident feels warrant a release from their contract. Extenuating circumstances require verifiable documentation.
  4. Graduation: The resident has met all requirements for graduation from NJC at any point during duration of the contract. Verification must be received through the Records Office.
  5. Waiver from First-Year Housing Policy: The resident meets any one of the criteria listed in Section 1, subsection 2 of the Residence Hall Contract. Documentation will be required.

In all cases, a letter from the resident and a parent must accompany all requests for a contract release. This letter must state, in detail, all circumstances surrounding the release request.

If a resident is granted a contract release for one of the five reasons listed above, their deposit will be refunded (less damage charges or outstanding balance on student account) and their remaining room and board balance will be refunded.

Refunds of Room Deposits

Housing deposits of $150.00 will be refunded only in accordance with the following procedure:

A full refund of the deposit will be granted if the written request is postmarked/submitted on or prior to July 1 of that year for the Fall Semester and December 1 for the Spring Semester or within 30 days of initiating the contract. Requests after the designated dates will not be honored and the deposit forfeited. Students on waiting lists for hall assignments after July 1 or December 1 are not subject to a forfeiture of deposit.

Food Services

The college has one main cafeteria that seats three hundred people with the option of banquet facilities to accommodate four hundred fifty persons in the Hays Student Center Ballroom. The college contracts the food services operation to a private company; the current vendor is Aladdin.

Northeastern requires all student residents to contract for a meal (board) plan while living on campus.

Each student is issued a photo ID that has their meal plan encoded. The ID card gives the student access to the cafeteria for their selected meal plan.

The cafeteria is open the days the residence halls are open and closed for the major breaks, such as between semesters, Thanksgiving Break, and Spring Break.

The food service company strives to serve students with various menus, quality service, and unlimited seconds for most meals. Special catering is available upon request for any location on campus. Purchasing food catering or food service from vendors other than the contracted food service company is prohibited.

Academic Standard for Returning Residence Hall Students

Returning students wanting to reside in the residence halls must have at least a 2.00 CUM GPA. Incoming first-year students will have a year to show sufficient academic progress for continued residence on campus.

Health Services

The Family Care Clinic and the Banner Health Care Clinic serve Northeastern students. They are located at 615 Fairhurst in Sterling or 102 Hayes Avenue in Sterling (depending on the appointed doctor). Both clinics are fully staffed and provide front line health care. Full-time students (12 credit hours or more) may be seen by staff without charge. Other minimal fees are assessed to all patients to cover the cost of materials such as strep screening, urine screening, any lab procedures, and supplies such as braces, condoms, bandages, etc. Students can make an appointment by calling 970-521-3223.
