Editorial Style Guide and Brand Guidelines
How to Use Logos
Usage Guidelines
- Do! Use the logo when you create printed material or web pages.
- Do! Use the logo in its entirety—it is the official trademark of the college.
- Do! Check with the Northeastern Marketing Department if you have questions.
The logo must appear in its entirety.
- The logo includes both the flame and the N, in the correct typeface and specified colors.
- The two elements are inseparable and unalterable.
- No additional elements may be added.
It is not permissible to change the typeface of the logo or alter the proportion or composition of the logo in any way.
The name of the college be shown in the typeface and configuration of the logo without the flame.
Printing
- When printed in color, the logo should always be in its official two-color format, black N, gold flame, black wordmark.
- When printed in gray-scale, the logo should be solid black N, white flame with black outline, black wordmark or solid white N and white flame with black outline, black wordmark.
- When printing on dark backgrounds, the logo should be solid white N, gold flame, white wordmark or solid white N with black outline, white flame and white wordmark.
- Maintain legibility when reversing the logo out of colored, patterned or photographic backgrounds.
- The pictorial mark may be used when space is limited or when it’s intended as a graphic element, such as on promotional items. Be sure to always use the primary Northeastern logo somewhere on the piece.
Logo Color
The primary logo should appear only in the colors (Figure 6):
- PMS 116C
- Black or gradient black
- White
Note: The logo should be reproduced so that it is easily seen and recognized. Always place the logo on a solid, contrasting background. Do not place the logo on a busy or multi-colored background.
Logo Size
The Northeastern logo should never be the dominant element on the page; instead it should live comfortably and clearly as an identifying mark. Never reproduce the logo at widths smaller than one inch or 200 pixels. There is no maximum size limit, but use discretion when sizing the logo (e.g., merchandise, business cards).
Clear Space
Maintain sufficient open space around the logo for legibility and prominence. Ensure clear space is maintained around the logo for legibility and the opportunity to stand out.
Photos, text and graphic elements must follow this guideline. Use the capital N as a measuring tool for proper clearance (Figure 11).
On the Web
When using the logo online:
- Always on the first page of major categories/sites (i.e., academic departments)
- Use the logo as a link back to the Northeastern homepage
- Always in the correct color and size
- Never use the Northeastern logo or elements of it as a background or watermark
Logo Variation for Specific Use
The Northeastern Office of Admission utilizes a logo (Figure 8) with a slight variation from the official Northeastern logo. The words “Junior College” is replaced with “Sterling, Colorado.” This logo is used in marketing collateral specifically geared towards prospective, traditional-age students.
All other collateral, created to generate local interest, support of the institution, and ownership of institution by students once they are enrolled here, shall bear the official logo with no modifications.
NOTE: On occasion, the official logo/emblem may appear as just the flame, the word mark Northeastern or just the emblem of the “N” and the flame, without any reference to Junior College, Sterling, Colorado or Northeastern. Instances where this might happen include banners, signage, and embroidered apparel. If you have questions about this use of the logo, please consult with the Northeastern Marketing Department.
Logo Use in Video
The logo is applied as a watermark in the lower-right corner of the frame. Logo is scaled to 10 percent, with an opacity of 70 percent.
Off-Campus Use
The use of any Northeastern Junior College name, logo, or trademark by any other organization, business, or individual must be approved by the Northeastern Marketing Department prior to use. This serves to protect the reputation of the college and the integrity of the marks by ensuring that only approved representations of the college’s marks appear before the public.
Commercial Use
Commercial use of the Northeastern names, symbols, and logos must be approved and licensed in advance. Items that are purchased or produced for promotional use or resale must be purchased from a licensed supplier. This includes merchandise purchased by staff from third parties, retail items, promotional partnerships, and other uses of Northeastern.
Vendors who fail to follow this policy may lose license permissions and the ability to do business with Northeastern.
Use of the names, logos, and trademarks are approved through the Northeastern Marketing Department to ensure that the marks are used according to design standards, and to protect Northeastern’s claim on the marks.
When in doubt about any form of logo or usage, contact the Northeastern Marketing Department.
