NP 3-31a - Appendix A - Definitions

Definitions

Culture – A shared system of values borne out of individual experiences (Huang, et al, 2021).

Culturally responsive (education/teaching) - Culturally Responsive Teaching is a pedagogy that recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning (Ladson-Billings, 1994)

Equity – fairness and justice and is distinguished from equality: Whereas equality means providing the same to all, equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. The process is ongoing, requiring us to identify and overcome intentional and unintentional barriers arising from bias or systemic structures.

Inclusive learning environment – Including each student’s cultural background and references into the learning environment (Hollinrake, 2019)

Demonstrating equity and inclusion skills – Incorporating skills learned through self-assessment, understanding students, colleagues, and peers, assertive communication, and lifelong learning (Smith, 2017).

Best practices – Practices that add value and support organizational goals (Quitoras & Abuso, 2021)

One thing that I will never forget is when I came here everyone was so friendly and welcoming. If someone has an opportunity to come here, they should take it! It is a special experience to see the world in another way and spread their horizons.

I was able to learn different aspects of many different specialties such as OB, OR, geriatrics, and mental health. It gave me more of an idea which specialties I liked, and which ones I did not.
